Types of Integrations in Switchboard + How They Work

Last updated: August 31, 2026

Integrations Overview

Switchboard supports integrations with several third-party platforms, allowing you to bring your data into Switchboard and take action on it. Each integration works a little differently depending on how it connects to Switchboard — here's what to know about each one.

ActBlue

Connection type: Webhook

ActBlue connects to Switchboard via a webhook, which means donation data flows into Switchboard automatically in real time — no manual imports required. Whenever a donation is made through ActBlue, Switchboard is notified immediately.

With the ActBlue integration, you can:

Note: Setting up the ActBlue integration requires approval from an admin on your ActBlue account. See our ActBlue webhook setup guide for step-by-step instructions.

NGPVAN / EveryAction

Connection type: API (list-based)

The NGPVAN and EveryAction integration connects via API, but unlike a webhook, it doesn't continuously stream data into Switchboard. Instead, it allows you to pull lists on demand and configure automated actions that write data back to your VAN account.

Important: Because this is a list-based integration rather than a form-submission one, EveryAction/NGP forms do not automatically create new records in Switchboard the way ActionKit forms do. Phones need to be imported via a VAN Saved List import for Switchboard to sync the phone number with the person's VANID.

With the NGPVAN / EveryAction integration, you can:

  • Pull lists directly from your NGPVAN account(s) into Switchboard

  • Configure labels to trigger an action in VAN (apply an activist code, survey response, or canvass response) when that label is applied to a phone in Switchboard

  • Automatically log outreach back to VAN: once a contact has been imported via the integration (so Switchboard knows their VANID), texting them will automatically add a TEXTED canvass response (contact type "SMS Text"), and emailing them will add a CANVASSED response (contact type "Bulk Email")

ActionKit

Connection type: API (near real-time form capture + on-demand list import)

The ActionKit integration works in two ways:

Near real-time form capture (automatic). When someone submits an ActionKit form, they're automatically created as a record in Switchboard without any list pull. Because a form submission is an affirmative opt-in, these contacts come in as opted in. This makes ActionKit well-suited for capturing new supporters as they come in.

List import from a report (on-demand). You can also build a Switchboard phone list or email list directly from an ActionKit query report. You point Switchboard at one of your existing ActionKit reports to import the phones or emails in that report. This is useful when you organize your contact universe in ActionKit and want to text or email a specific list rather than waiting for new form submissions.

A few things to know about report imports:

  • You'll need ActionKit credentials connected to your organization in Switchboard, and an existing query report in ActionKit that returns the people you want.

  • Recognized columns map automatically to standard Switchboard fields. These include user_id, first_name, middle_name, last_name, address1, city, state, and zip. See the phone-column note below for how phone fields are matched. Any other column is brought in as a custom field on the list. A phone list import requires a recognized phone column; an email list import requires an email column.

  • It's a one-time import, not a recurring sync — same as a VAN Saved List import. To refresh, run the import again.

  • Opt-in status follows CSV-import rules, not form rules. Because pulling a report isn't an affirmative opt-in the way submitting a form is, imported contacts use the same opt-in/subscription defaults as a CSV upload.
